Public Consultation on Pig Slaughterhouse Control
On June 30, 2021, the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (“MAPA”) published Ordinance no. 341/2021, submitting for Public Consultation the proposal of an Ordinance to regulate the information on forms for the “Health Bulletin” and “Control of receipt of pig lots for slaughter”.
Such forms are mandatory for pig slaughterhouses (as provided for in Article 89 of Decree No. 9,013/2017), and their purpose is to present to the Federal Inspection Service (“SIF”) the information related to the slaughter schedule, allowing for the verification of the sanitary and physical conditions of the product (such as the identification, management and origin of the lots).
According to data from the Brazilian Agricultural Research Company (“Embrapa”), pork production in Brazil is the fourth largest on the planet (4.436 million tons), with 77% produced for the domestic consumption. Although most of the production was focused on the domestic market, between 2018 and 2020, Embrapa identified that exports grew by 36.53%.
In response to this scenario, MAPA intends to standardize these documents, considering the relevance of the health control of the sector. As Ana Lúcia Viana (Director of the Department of Inspection of Animal Products – Dipoa) explained, the “production of safe food for the consumer and the international certification of animal products depends on the control and obtaining of information in the animal production phase”.
The public will have a period of 60 days – from the date of publication of the Ordinance – to submit contributions to the Public Consultation (via this link), after first registering in the Access Request System (“Request”) (via this link).
